SAN FRANCISCO JAZZ ORGANIZATION
Marketing Associate | May 1999—May 2000
SAN FRANCISCO, CA
Part leap of faith, part desperation, I was hired by the outgoing financial director at SFJAZZ to manage the launch of a new retail store for the organization in 1998. The planned incumbent bailed, and there I was, a young jazz fan. Luckily, without much managerial experience they trusted me, and I dove in. The store was a success and today the unbelievable Hayes Valley SFJAZZ headquarters is a far cry from the modest storefront and office of that Embarcadero spot. And there, I fell in love with the simplicity-in-design of the staff's graphic designer. So, when the marketing associate position opened up I jumped. Knowing barely how to use a computer, I learned Adobe, Microsoft, and database management. A print producer was born.
Traffic graphic files and produce all SFJAZZ print material including ads, brochures, program books, outdoor displays, and signage in close collaboration with designers. Execute the organization’s festival ad campaign, design support for other departments. Create and maintain festival material archive. Coordinate distribution of all local promotional material, and hire freelance designers.
